Kômei Juku

Komei Juku is a school founded by Sekiguchi Komei sensei to promote Iaijutsu practice around the world.

The ryu (or style) is Musô Jikiden Eishin Ryu (MJER).

Dating back to the middle 16th century, Iaijutsu means "withdraw and cut in a same move". It has been theorized for the first time by Hayashizaki Shigenobu (1542-1621 some documents say he was born in 1546), a samurai from Dewa province (today Yamagata prefecture).
He would have created Iaijutsu during his quest to avenge his father. During his training, he had a revelation that brought him to learn how to use a sword in a different way.
Next, he began a warrior pilgrimage (Musha Shugyo) and created several schools ( Hayashizaki Ryu, Shin Musô Hayashizaki Ryu, Shigenobu Ryu for exemple).
Musô Jikiden Eishin ryu as taught today has been creating in 1674 by the 9th generation soke, in Tosa province. It became Yamauchi clan’s legacy (Yamauchi were the daimyo of Tosa).

Like many styles, it had a restricted diffusion and advanced techniques were secrets.
The school opened to public audience only during 19th century.

Sekiguchi sensei inherited this tradition and works to spread it across the world.

Through Kômei Juku, Sekiguchi sensei wishes both transmit technical but also spiritual and cultural samurai’s heritage.
The focus is on sharing, conviviality, mutual help, work of different katas but also the study and understanding of those.

Samurais are still alive. Their spirit and culture now teach to practicioners how to be more humans. Nevertheless, technical aspect is very important and different katas series allow different technical approaches.
A nice to watch Iai, even for a novice demonstrates a self controle as well as technical knowledge.

Sekiguchi sensei regulary travels around the world to teach during differents seminars in the countries where the school is present.
Those seminars are occasions to learn directly from the base of knowledge.
